The
2009 relay between invited local clubs will take place on Friday 17th July starting at 7.15pm in the beautiful area around Fewston
and Swinsty Yorkshire Water reservoirs - north of Otley.

FROM 2008 - The event is now for teams of 3 people (previously 4, with old
leg one having now been dropped) and each stage is about 3 or 4 miles in
length.

This event, based upon an idea by the late former
Otley AC member Phil Dean, has been held regularly since the early 1990s.
The course is split into 4 segments averaging 4.0
miles / 6.3 km and takes place on public footpaths, bridleways and a small
amount of road in the scenic Washburn Valley around Blubberhouses, Timble,
Swinsty Reservoir and Fewston Reservoir. Every stage starts and
finishes at the car park to avoid a convoy of cars charging up and down the
countryside.
In 2003 and 2004, the race was stages over 5 legs
but this was dropped back down to 4 legs in 2005 because slower teams were
finishing in the dark and the farmer was not too impressed by some people
leaving gates open! Therefore, Stage 5 in 2004 is now stage 4, Stage 4 in
2004 is now stage 3, Stage 3 in 2004 is now stage 2, Stage 2 in 2004 is now
stage 1, Stage 1 in 2004 being the dropped leg.
For
similar reasons above, in 2008 it was decided to drop the previous Stage 1
and hence from 2008 previous Stage 2 is now stage 1, previous Stage 3
(around Fewston) is now stage 2 and the final previous Stage 4 (around
Swinsty) is now stage 3.
The race is not marshalled and there is only
limited marking of the course so it is essential to recce the route
beforehand. There is the Tony Allen trophy for the winning male team
(presently held by Otley AC), the Joyce Smith trophy for the winning female
team (presently held by Otley AC) and a prize for the first mixed team
(including at least one man). The presentation takes place after the
race at Fewston car park with subsequent adjournment to The Spite pub on the
way back to Otley.
